It is a house divided into two living units or residences, usually having separate entrances. It also can be an apartment building or condominium, usually impossible to differentiate from a normal house on the exterior. Duplex can also refer to three unit buildings, known as a triplex and four unit buildings, known as a quadruplex, that usually refer to movie theatres.
Therefore, the line between an apartment building and a duplex is somewhat blurred, with apartment buildings tending to be larger, while duplexes are usually the size of a normal house. Duplexes are particularly common in the Northeastern United States.
